Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

The Backstory We've Been Waiting For

The Mad Max universe is expanding once again with George Miller's much-anticipated prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. This latest installment dives deep into the origins of Imperator Furiosa, a character who captivated audiences in Mad Max: Fury Road. Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the role, promising to deliver a fresh yet powerful portrayal.

A Plot That Keeps You Hooked

The film takes us back to a time early in the wasteland timeline. It shows us key moments in Furiosa's journey from a child to adulthood, highlighting how she was raised to be self-sufficient and protective of her people and home settlement. These formative experiences justify her formidable abilities seen in this film and in Fury Road. With key moments that include Furiosa's capture and existance in the ruthless society of the Australian wasteland, the narrative ties neatly into the broader Mad Max saga, complete with a clever Max cameo. While some may complain about the runtime, I was hard-pressed to find content that could have been cut in the edit.

Stellar Performances

Anya Taylor-Joy shines as Furiosa, embodying the character's strength and determination. Chris Hemsworth, in a transformative role as Dementus, brings a new layer of complexity to the series. His performance is both intense and nuanced, adding significant tension. I only wish we could have seen more of the story from his perspective or given a glimpse of his activities behind the scenes that we don’t get to see. Tom Burke also delivers a notable performance, as an almost Max like character that helps Furiosa make that final transition to the character we meet in Fury Road enhancing the film's rich character tapestry and lore.

Cinematic Brilliance

George Miller's direction is once again a masterclass in high-octane action and stunning visuals. The cinematography captures expansive desert landscapes and meticulously designed sets, immersing viewers in the apocalyptic world. Practical effects and stunts, a hallmark of the Mad Max franchise, lend authenticity and a visceral edge to the action sequences.

Themes and Depth

Furiosa explores themes of power, survival, and identity. It delves into the struggle for autonomy in a world dominated by tyranny and examines the concept of heroism. The time skips in the movie effectively showcase Furiosa's drive, determination, and capabilities from an early age, providing a comprehensive look at her character development.

Expanding the Mad Max Universe

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga excels at expanding George Miller's universe. The film introduces rich world-building details, offering a deeper understanding of the post-apocalyptic setting. While the timeline may seem disrupted by the events of this movie and Fury Road, fans need only to overlook the dates given in the original films to see how seamlessly they fit together. This prequel enriches the lore and leaves audiences eager for more.

A Box Office Struggle Not Indicative of Quality

Despite the film's low box office opening, it's essential to understand that this does not reflect the quality of the movie. Several factors have contributed to the subdued financial performance. Rising everyday cost have significantly affected the movie-going experience. As well as sometime you just don’t want to have to deal with other people. Audiences are becoming more selective about which films they see in theaters, often opting for at-home viewing options instead. These economic and social dynamics have posed challenges for many recent releases, including Furiosa.

Conclusion

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a thrilling addition to the franchise, providing a compelling origin story that is both emotionally resonant and visually spectacular. George Miller's enduring creativity ensures that the Mad Max saga continues to push boundaries, making this film a must-watch for fans and newcomers alike.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga successfully broadens the Mad Max universe, offering a deeper dive into one of its most iconic characters. This prequel is a testament to the franchise's ability to evolve while staying true to its roots, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter.

Super Perils of Baking Review

Review by Wayne McCarthy

Super Perils of Baking invokes a simpler time in gaming. A modern take on a classic 2D side scrolling platformer in the lineage of Super Mario Brothers, Castlevania and Metroid. With a modern art style that grabs your visual attention and hooks you in to this heartfelt modern retro time warp to a simpler time. When we use to gather around the TV and take turns trying to beat levels in our favorite NES and SNES games.

SPoB has all the makings of a indie darling. Developed by Lillymo Games it is a remake of their first game. In a world of remakes this one is a refreshing good use of the now industry wide remake trope. Remaking a game so that it can now get into more hands then when originally launched is a good use of the time of a team.

The simplistic retro style story is a breath of fresh air. Many games from the heyday of the side scroller had overly simplistic stories if they had stories at all. SPoB has a story in it that can be seen as almost a kids story. Something that parents can play with their kids like story time. The story of the 2 baking Brothers is a throw back to simple stories with deeper meanings meant to teach life lessons. With an art style that will appeal to kids and adults alike.

I will admit I have never been any good at side scrollers or platformers but I found myself engaged enough to keep trying levels instead of just giving up. For the more hardcore gamers out there SPoB has a breath of secrets and unlockables. Also the very rare two trophy list one for PS4 and a different one for PS5. With the PS4 being easier to get the platinum then the PS5. Its these small details that shows that the creators of this game truly love what they are doing and understand how to appeal to a broad audience and deliver something for everyone.

On the Media Clash 5 point scale

Super Perils of Baking gets a 4 out of 5.

This game is Damn near Perfect and will appeal to a broad audience.

Highly recommended

Super Perils of Baking is available on PS4, PS5, Switch, PC and XBox
